Greetings, today was such a good day!
Today was a success for the artist of Highland Open Studio Tours Sundays (HOSTS). What is HOSTS you ask?
HOSTS is a self-guided art tour that is organized by Highland visual artists Karen T. La Beau and Kathryn Usher. HOSTS takes place quarterly and provides a structured medium where various art studios and small businesses located in Shreveport’s historic Highland neighborhood a market to sell their work and welcome visitors to their studios.
Demonstration was this month’s HOSTS theme and it was the perfect time to catch your favorite Highland Artist demonstrating his/her crafts!
There were five locations and 12 amazing participating artists.
Suite Nine1six owner Desire Mingo was open and showed off the Suite’s Suite style.
Susan Fortenberry opened her studio and let visitors view the art of Jewelry making and Sherry Tamburo demonstrated the art of felting.
Wendy Tisdale had supplies for visitors to make their very own magic wands and wishing stars, she even opened her massage studio, Magic Hands Massage.
At our location at Karen La Beau’s studio: La Beau demonstrated how she does her “white lines” series; Marci Hicks of Jobean Creative demonstrated the use of Copic Markers/Blending; Lynn Laird of Lynn Laird Fine Arts brought her whimsical characters to life through watercolor; I, Tori, of Tori’s Crafts & Creations demonstrated crocheting with a large hook and thick yarn; Christena Francis of Perfection 37 did a mini make and take where visitors made their own wire wrapped earrings; Tracy McComic of Wired & Sassy demonstrated the use of alcohol inks to paint metal clay; and Galen Light introduced his glass art to the world.
Daniel Cordell opened his studio and demonstrated the Lichtenberg wood burning technique. Wood burning, y’all!
Families, couples, and children enjoyed lots of laughs, food, smiles and all had a great time and raved about Tracy’s Payday Cupcakes. … and we were even visited by a local celebrity!
Tired of the suspense?
OK! We had Lynn, from The Lynn Vance Show, a local podcaster for Fox 33 whose show is exclusively on ArkLaTexhomepagecom come by and visit with us. So yes, we were winning on a beautiful Saturday! More details about that experience to come soon.
If you missed this month’s HOSTS, no need to worry. We have TWO MORE LEFT this year, one on September 10th and the other on December 10th. So mark your calendars and pen the dates in. In the meantime follow the Highland Open Studio Tour Sundays on Facebook for updates!
If you’re an artist and want to be apart of HOSTS you can send them a message them on thir Facebook page or contact Karen La Beau or Kathryn Usher at HostSundays@gmail.com.

I love being creative. I paint and do clay sculptures but felting was the one thing that I never attempted. Sadly. Wish I could have been there and seen that first hand.

It looks like such a lot of fun and very creative. I have heard of using wood burning for art but never done anything with it myself. 🙂
